Tokelau, known previously as the Tokelau Islands, is a dependent territory of New Zealand in the southern Pacific Ocean. It uses the New Zealand Dollar as circulation currency, but has been issuing a variety of non-circulating coins since 1978, and has also authorised some foreign mints to issue bullion coins under its jurisdiction.
The silver ounce (abbreviated as 1 oz) is an internationally popular format, and is denominated as Five Dollars.
This is the second issue in the Terra (Earth) series issued by the Pressburg Mint based in Bratislava, the capital of Slovakia. It is the first legal tender of the series, issued for Tokelau - the first issue was a "silver round" with no legal tender value.
The mint says about the coin: Earth - "Terra" in Latin, is our only home. It provides every resource needed for life, but our actions have left a mark on it. The level of CO2 is now at its highest in 4 million years, global temperatures are reaching new highs, glaciers are melting and sea levels are rising. This coin addresses the importance of protecting the environment and highlights the need of cooperation in tackling climate problems, no matter which side of the planet we live on.
The coin is minted using LBMA-certified 1oz 999/1000 silver blanks, undergoing a thorough cleaning process before striking. |
