Tokelau, known previously as the Tokelau Islands, is a dependent territory of New Zealand in the southern Pacific Ocean. It uses the New Zealand Dollar as circulation currency, but has been issuing a variety of non-circulating coins since 1978. These are denominated in dollars or "Tala" (the local word for dollar) and cents.
The country has also authorised some foreign mints to issue non circulating bullion coins under its jurisdiction, such as this 1 oz (one ounce) gold coin.
This coin is part of the Equilibrium series of bullion coins by the Pressburg Mint. The coins in the series have a new design every year and are about balance - equilibrium - between technology and humanity.
The mint says about it: The yin-yang is an especially important and popular representation of harmony, sprouting from the rich Asian tradition in philosophy. Equilibrium: a state in which opposing forces or influences are balanced. This year’s release contemplates the harmony between male and female energy and their traditional roles in society. |
