Tokelau, known previously as the Tokelau Islands, is a dependent territory of New Zealand in the southern Pacific Ocean. It uses the New Zealand Dollar as circulation currency, but has been issuing a variety of non-circulating coins since 1978, and has also authorised some foreign mints to issue bullion coins under its jurisdiction.
The silver ounce (abbreviated as 1 oz) is an internationally popular format, and is denominated as Five Dollars.
This coin is the second issue in the Equilibrium series of bullion coins by the Pressburg Mint.
The mint says about it: Scientists around the world are already using gene editing to treat disease, modify plants and animals, and even create designer babies. These techniques have the potential to revolutionise medicine, end starvation, save endangered species or just change colour of a butterfly wing. It holds great promise, but also poses a great danger of irreversible harms to the health of future generations, opens doors to new forms of social inequality, discrimination and conflict. Recently, genetic engineering techniques have been used for human germline modification.
Therefore, in 2019 within our series of Equilibrium coins, we are acknowledging the importance of responsible use of the power of gene editing in order to safeguard the balance between technological achievements and natural genetic code.
Coins are minted using LBMA-certified 1oz 999+/1000 silver blanks, undergoing a thorough cleaning process before striking. |
