Tokelau, known previously as the Tokelau Islands, is a dependent territory of New Zealand in the southern Pacific Ocean. It uses the New Zealand Dollar as circulation currency, but has been issuing a variety of non-circulating coins since 1978, and has also authorised some foreign mints to issue bullion coins under its jurisdiction - including in the internationally popular silver ounce format.
This is the first issue in the Icon series issued by the Pressburg Mint. The mint says about the coin: Icon in its many meanings - as a Greek word for image, as a religious work of art, as a characteristic of a famous person or a thing that represents something of importance - all is depicted in this coin - at a first glance or only at a closer look. |

Obverse | |
The obverse of the coin shows the crowned mature head of Queen Elizabeth II facing right (her effigy known as the "Fourth Portrait"). The Queen wears the "Girls of Great Britain and Ireland" diamond tiara, a wedding gift from Queen Mary (Her Majesty's grandmother) in 1947 - which she also has on the Machin and the Gottwald portraits.
In small letters below the head, the artist's initials IRB (for Ian Rank-Broadley).
Around the effigy is the monarch's legend, the date of issue and the value: TOKELAU 5 DOLLARS 2020 1 OZ FINE SILVER ELIZABETH II.
The inscription also includes the metal content - "1 oz silver" means "one troy ounce of silver".
Above the portrait, a small Maori "Koru" decorative motif.
The background is patterned with thin wavy lines. The rim is decorated with an Ancient Greek pattern. The date of issue 2020 is divided by the portrait. Divided year of issue is one of the distinguishing features of the historical Pressburg Mint, after which the modern mint is named. |

Reverse | |
The reverse design, which is surrounded by a rim decorated with an Ancient Greek pattern, consists entirely of a textured surface of thin lines. These display a latent image of a female head - stylised classical art inspired by the statue “Diana” by Hiram Powers (1805-1873), and the word ICON. |
