Tokelau, known previously as the Tokelau Islands, is a dependent territory of New Zealand in the southern Pacific Ocean. It uses the New Zealand Dollar as circulation currency, but has been issuing a variety of non-circulating coins since 1978. These are denominated in dollars or "Tala" (the local word for dollar) and cents. The country has also authorised some foreign mints to issue non circulating coins under its jurisdiction, such as this 1 oz (one ounce) silver coin. This coin is part of a series of "mirror" designs featuring the animals of the Chinese zodiac, and is dedicated to the 2024 Lunar Calendar Year of the Dragon (10 February 2024 - 28 January 2025). The dragon is the fifth in the zodiac animals, and for 2024 it is the Year of the Wood Dragon. The dragon is the only imaginary animal, and the most vital and powerful beast in the Chinese Zodiac. | ||||||
