The obverse of the coin depicts the crowned old head of Queen Elizabeth II facing right, wearing the Royal Diamond Diadem crown worn for her Coronation (effigy known as the "Fifth Portrait").

Running continuously around the effigy is the monarch's legend and the date: ELIZABETH II · D · G · REG · F · D · 50 PENCE · 2018 ·. Translated from Latin: Elizabeth the Second, by the Grace of God, Queen, Defender of the Faith, followed by the value and denomination in English and the year.

In small letters below the head, the artist's initials J.C (for Jody Clark).

The reverse shows the boy and his friend, The Snowman, flying together through the night sky above the twinkling lights of Brighton Pier. The designer's initials NR (for Natasha Ratcliffe) are in the right field.

On a cold winter’s morning, a little boy wakes up to find a blanket of snow as far as the eye can see. He builds a snowman in the garden complete with coal for buttons and an orange for a nose, dressed with a scarf and hat. When night falls, the snowman comes to life and a magical adventure begins, but wonder turns to sadness. The following morning, the boy rushes downstairs to find his new friend has melted.

Originally conceived as a way to introduce children to the concept of mortality, the story of The Snowman has become a much-loved festive favourite.
