Five Pounds 2017 Prince Philip, Coin from United Kingdom - detailed information

The obverse of the coin depicts the crowned old head of Queen Elizabeth II facing right, wearing the Royal Diamond Diadem crown worn for her Coronation (her effigy known as the "Fifth Portrait").

In small letters below the head, the artist's initials J.C (for Jody Clark).

Running continuously around the effigy is the monarch's legend: ELIZABETH II · D · G · REG · F · D · 5 POUNDS · 2017 ·. Translated from Latin: Elizabeth the Second, by the Grace of God, Queen, Defender of the Faith, followed by the value and denomination in English and the year.

The reverse features the young medallic portrait of Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, designed by Thomas Humphrey Paget, facing right. The artist's initials HP are below the neck truncation.

Around above, the inscription HIS ROYAL HIGHNESS THE DUKE OF EDINBURGH. Around below, the motto, the date · NON SIBI SED PATRIAE · (translated from Latin: Not for himself but for his country).

"As His Royal Highness The Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh steps back from public duties, he can reflect on his record of achievement with a well-earned sense of pride. After a short but distinguished naval career, Prince Philip found a new purpose in life as a loyal consort to Her Majesty The Queen. For eight decades he has also devoted himself to hundreds of different causes, to inspiring young people, championing British design and engineering and campaigning tirelessly to protect the environment. He is also a former president of The Royal Mint Advisory Committee.

To recognise this enormous contribution through service, The Royal Mint has struck a £5 Brilliant Uncirculated coin. This original design features one of the last commissions by highly respected designer Thomas ‘Humphrey’ Paget. The coin table has been worked on by Royal Mint coin designer Lee R. Jones to include a new inscription. It reads ‘NON SIBI SED PATRIAE’ in Latin, which means ‘Not for himself but for his country’."
