Like many other mints, the Royal Mint issues bullion coins in precious metals, having much higher intrinsic value than their face value. The one ounce (1 oz) gold coins are denominated as One Hundred Pounds (£100). The coins are legal tender but are not intended for circulation. They are targeted at bullion investors or collectors who appreciate the special editions as pieces of art. The coins are typically "one-year" types usually issued in parallel with smaller denominations with the same reverse designs. This coin is part of a range celebrating the national symbols of the United Kingdom and the United States. The Royal Mint says about it: For the first time in history, the Chief Engravers of The Royal Mint and the United States Mint have collaborated on a single design, combining their experience and expertise. Inspired by the concept of court cards, the figures of Britannia and Liberty are given equal prominence in the design. The figures also represent fortitude and freedom, virtues that underpin the national identities of both the UK and the US. | ||||||||||||
