Like many other mints, the Royal Mint issues bullion coins in precious metals, having much higher intrinsic value than their face value. The one ounce (1 oz) gold coins are denominated as One Hundred Pounds (£100).
The coins are legal tender but are not intended for circulation. They are targeted at bullion investors or collectors who appreciate the special editions as pieces of art. The coins are typically "one-year" types usually issued in parallel with smaller denominations with the same reverse designs.
This commemorative one-ounce gold coin is part of the seventh and final release marking six decades of James Bond films, and is a "completer" design combining elements of all the earlier issues.
The mint says about it:
"For more than 60 years, James Bond has wowed cinema-goers worldwide with his trademark blend of wit, action and espionage. A global sensation known around the world, the iconic secret agent has become as ingrained in British culture as any other character in movie history. Starting with the 1960s, each coin explores a different decade of the 007 films and features an iconic scene from that decade of Bond."
The series was designed by Matthew Dent and Christian Davies, who also designed an earlier James Bond range issued by the Royal Mint between 2020 and 2022 (on coins and non-legal tender bullion). |

The obverse of the coin displays the first definitive portrait of King Charles III, which shows his bare (uncrowned) head facing left.
Below the neck truncation in tiny letters, the artist's initials MJ (for Martin Jennings).
Around, the monarch's legend followed by the face value and date of issue: CHARLES III · D · G · REX · F · D · 100 POUNDS · 2024 ·. Translated from Latin, the legend means: Charles the Third, by the Grace of God, King, Defender of the Faith.

The reverse design of the coin is divided into six segments in a pattern like the spiraling rifling of a gun barrel, which is a hallmark symbol of the series. Each of these contains the central motif of one of the earlier release; starting from top clockwise: the "Little Nellie" autogyro from the 1960s, the famous Lotus Esprit S1 sports car from the 1970, the Bede BD5J Acrostar plane from the 1980s, a racing speedboat from the 1990s, a Griffon 2000TD hovercraft from the 2000s, and the snow plane from the 2010s.
At centre, the 007 logo of the franchise, with the 7 being in the shape of a pistol.
Below, the designer's initials, CD for Christian Davies and MD for Matthew (Matt) Dent.
Repeated four times around the rim, the inscription SIX DECADES OF 007 ·. |
