Coin | Gold Ounce 2022 Myths and Legends - Robin Hood: Maid Marian |
---|
|
Like many other mints, the Royal Mint issues bullion coins in precious metals, having much higher intrinsic value than their face value. The one ounce (1 oz) gold coins are denominated as One Hundred Pounds (£100).
The coins are legal tender but are not intended for circulation. They are targeted at bullion investors or collectors who appreciate the special editions as pieces of art. The coins are typically "one-year" types usually issued in parallel with smaller denominations with the same reverse designs.
This is the second design in the Myths and Legends range of bullion coins by the Royal Mint; the first one featured Robin Hood.
The Mint says about the coin: "At The Royal Mint, tradition has long gone hand in hand with innovation. Our new bullion coin collection, inspired by myths and legends, explores enchanting stories that have been passed down through generations and are still celebrated today.
The collection first explores the story of Robin Hood, which began with the legend himself, and now focuses on his adventurous and quick-witted companion Maid Marian. Sometimes described as a woman of high stature but always a woman of the people, Maid Marian is said to have gathered valuable information that informed Robin Hood and his band of merry men in their adventures through Sherwood Forest. One more coin inspired by the tale will follow, featuring Robin Hood’s trusted companion Little John.
Maid Marian has been depicted in a design by Jody Clark standing watchful amongst the greenery of Sherwood Forest, stealthily observing through the trees with a bow and a quiver of arrows on her back, poised for action." |

Translated from Latin: Elizabeth the Second, by the Grace of God, Queen, Defender of the Faith, followed by the value and denomination in English.
The obverse has a textured background ("guilloche" geometric pattern). |
