Coin | Silver Ounce 2024 Britannia and Liberty, Proof |
---|
|
Like many other mints, the Royal Mint issues bullion coins in precious metals, having much higher intrinsic value than their face value. The one ounce (1 oz) silver coins are denominated as either two pounds (£2) or five pounds (£5), depending on the occasion.
Initially, these were only of the Britannia type, but in 2015 the Royal Mint started to use the format for coins with other types of reverse designs, celebrating various aspects of British heritage.
The coins are legal tender but are not intended for circulation. They are targeted at bullion investors or collectors who appreciate the special editions as pieces of art.
This coin is part of a range celebrating the national symbols of the United Kingdom and the United States.
The Royal Mint says about it: Britannia and Liberty, the symbols of two proud nations with a special relationship, feature together on a commemorative UK coin for the first time.
For the first time in history, the Chief Engravers of The Royal Mint and the United States Mint have collaborated on a single design, combining their experience and expertise. Inspired by the concept of court cards, the figures of Britannia and Liberty are given equal prominence in the design. The figures also represent fortitude and freedom, virtues that underpin the national identities of both the UK and the US. |

Reverse | |
In a symmetric pattern at centre, the reverse of the coin depicts Britannia - the female personification of the United Kingdom, and Liberty - a symbol of the United States. They face in opposite directions, like the figures on a playing card.
Britannia is shown as a young woman wearing a Corinthian helmet pulled up to reveal her face, holding a trident (overlaid on Liberty), as a symbol of the past maritime glory of England. In small letters below the figure, the initials of the designer - GS, for Gordon Summers.
Facing the other way (so that the coin needs to be rotated to be seen properly), Liberty is presented as a young woman with flowing hair, holding a flaming torch (overlaid on Britannia). Over her hair, and in the background, seven five-pointed stars. In small letters below the figure, the initials of the designer - JFM (for Joseph Francis Menna).
Around above, the inscription BRITANNIA AND LIBERTY. Around below, the date of issue and the precious metal content: · 2024 · 1 oz 999 FINE SILVER · (one troy ounce of 99.9% silver). |
