Gold Ounce 2023 James Bond - 1960s, Proof, Coin from United Kingdom - detailed information

Like many other mints, the Royal Mint issues bullion coins in precious metals, having much higher intrinsic value than their face value. The one ounce (1 oz) gold coins are denominated as One Hundred Pounds (£100).

The coins are legal tender but are not intended for circulation. They are targeted at bullion investors or collectors who appreciate the special editions as pieces of art. The coins are typically "one-year" types usually issued in parallel with smaller denominations with the same reverse designs.

This commemorative one-ounce gold coin is part of the first out of seven releases marking six decades of James Bond films, and is dedicated to those released in the 1960s.

The mint says about it:
"For more than 60 years, James Bond has wowed cinema-goers worldwide with his trademark blend of wit, action and espionage. A global sensation known around the world, the iconic secret agent has become as ingrained in British culture as any other character in movie history.

Starting with the 1960s, each coin explores a different decade of the 007 films and features an iconic scene from that decade of Bond. This coin features Little Nellie, which was the nickname given to a heavily armed autogyro featured in the film adaptation of "You Only Live Twice". In the film it was shipped by Q in four suitcases and assembled before use. Little Nellie was based on a modified Wallis WA-116 Agile, a British autogyro developed in the early 1960s by former Royal Air Force Wing Commander Ken Wallis."

The series was designed by Matthew Dent and Christian Davies, who also designed an earlier James Bond range issued by the Royal Mint between 2020 and 2022 (on coins and non-legal tender bullion).
