This circulating commemorative fifty cents coin marks the 60th Anniversary of the end of World War 2. Its design was inspired by a photograph in the Australian War Memorial collection of a scene of a burial at El Alamein in 1942. The coin was designed and sculpted by Wojciech Pietranik. It has now been in circulation for 18 years.

6,500 silver proofs were also issued in 0.999 purity (18.24 g = 0.5858 ASW), and 650 gold proofs in 0.9999 purity (33.63g = 1.0811 AGW).

Obverse

The obverse shows the crowned mature head of Queen Elizabeth II facing right (her effigy known as the "Fourth Portrait"). The Queen wears the "Girls of Great Britain and Ireland" diamond tiara, a wedding gift from Queen Mary (Her Majesty's grandmother) in 1947 - which she also has on the Machin and the Gottwald portraits.

In small letters below the head, the artist's initials IRB (for Ian Rank-Broadley).

Around the effigy is the monarch's legend and the date: ELIZABETH II AUSTRALIA 2005.

Reverse
The reverse depicts a burial at El Alamein in 1942: a cemetery with a soldier, a priest and mourners standing solemnly against a background of graves. Around above, WORLD WAR 1939 - 1945 REMEMBRANCE. The denomination and value FIFTY CENTS are in the exergue.
