|Coin||Fifty Cents 2020 Christmas Decoration|
The Australian 50 cent denomination was first introduced as a silver coin with decimalisation on 14 February 1966, but was changed in 1969 to its current specifications: a large dodecagonal (12-sided) copper-nickel coin; apart from the usual design featuring the Australian Coat of Arms, the denomination is also extensively used to issue circulating commemorative coins with various reverses. It is one of the heaviest coins in regular circulation in the world.
Apart from circulating coins, the Royal Australian Mint has a range of Non-Circulating Legal Tender (NCLT) 50 cent coins issued for collectors, such as this one.
This coin was issued for the festive season and is the Royal Australian Mint's second special Christmas coin. The coin comes in a beautiful gift card that pops out - transforming the coin into a hanging decoration.
The Mint says:
"Inspired by Australia’s official floral emblem - golden wattle, this coin is bursting with joy and festive sparkle."
The obverse of the coin depicts the crowned old head of Queen Elizabeth II facing right, wearing the Royal Diamond Diadem crown and the Victoria Coronation necklace worn for her Coronation. This is her effigy known as the "Fifth Portrait" worldwide and "Sixth Portrait" in Australia, in "uncouped" version - showing the Queen's shoulders and not terminating at the neck as the normal version.
On the left, in small letters on the Queen's shoulder, the artist's initials J.C (for Jody Clark).
Running continuously around the rim is the monarch's legend, the date of issue and the face value: ELIZABETH II · AUSTRALIA 2020 · 50 CENTS ·.
The reverse design features a highly decorative stylised representation of wattle flowers, leaves and pollen in an arrangement reminding of a Christmas tree decoration.
The designer's initials AS (for Aleksandra Stokic) are high on the right side.
There is no inscription. The value, denomination and date of issue are on the obverse.
