New Zealand uses the New Zealand Dollar as its circulation currency for daily transactions. The country also issues a number of commemorative and collector coins, including in the internationally popular half gram of gold mini-coin format (abbreviated as 0.5 g oz Au, where "Au" comes from the Latin word for gold, Aurum). Authorised by the Reserve Bank of New Zealand, the official issuer of these coins is NZ Post - which also issues the country's postal stamps. Manufacturing of the coins is commissioned to various foreign mints.
The coins are "Non-Circulating Legal Tender" (NCLT) and not bullion because they are issued at prices much higher than their intrinsic value and are targeted at collectors who appreciate them for their artistic or sentimental value, and not at bullion investors.
This gold coin was issued to celebrate the Coronation of King Charles III in 2023. It features an obverse with a portrait of the king developed especially for the New Zealand coin series marking the occasion.
NZ Post says about the coin: For almost a thousand years, each monarch of Britain, and later New Zealand, has been crowned in a special ceremony months after their accession. A coronation is an important day in the history of the nation, a vibrant shared experience for the public, and an occasion of deep personal significance in the life of the monarch. A .5g gold proof coin has been created to commemorate this momentous occasion. |

Obverse | |
The obverse of the coin shows the bare (uncrowned) head of King Charles III facing left.
In small letters below the neck truncation, the artist's initials: SJF (for Stephen Fuller).
Around, the monarch's legend and date of issue: CHARLES III · NEW ZEALAND 2023.
The inscription also indicates the precious metal content - ".9999 Au .5g" means "one half of a gram of 99.99% gold"; Au is abbreviated from Aurum, the Latin word for gold. |

Reverse | |
The reverse of the coin features at its centre the royal cypher C III R (from Charles III Rex - Charles the Third, King), crowned with Saint Edward's Crown. Named after Saint Edward the Confessor, one of the last Anglo-Saxon kings of England (1042 - 5 January 1066), this crown has been traditionally used to crown English and British monarchs at their coronations since the 13th century (with a two-century gap between 1689 and 1911).
Around above, the inscription KING CHARLES III CORONATION; around below, the face value FIFTY CENTS. |
