Niue, a sovereign state in free association with New Zealand, uses two official legal tender currencies. The New Zealand Dollar is the circulation currency for daily transactions, while the government also authorises legal tender coins in the Niue Dollar currency for collector's purposes.
A number of mints issue a large variety of commemorative and collector coins under the authority of Niue. These coins are dedicated to historical or general popular culture themes not related to Niue itself. Many of them are in standard bullion sizes - such as one ounce of gold (abbreviated as 1 oz Au, where "Au" comes from the Latin word for gold, Aurum).
The King Charles III Coronation Crown 2023 $100 Diamond 1oz Gold Proof Coin is a celebration of a historic event involving rites that date back more than a millennium - King Charles III’s Coronation.
Shortly after Charles III’s accession, following the passing of Queen Elizabeth II, the new king made a public pledge to the United Kingdom and the Commonwealth to serve “with loyalty, respect and love” - three words which decorate this coin.
2023 is not only the year of Charles III’s coronation, but also marks the 70th anniversary of the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II. |

Obverse | |
The obverse of the coin features the (unofficial) "Public Seal of Niue". It has what looks like a plant arrangement at centre, within a double ornamental circle, itself surrounded by a circle of sea shells. This is crowned with St Edward's Crown (a symbol of the United Kingdom, the monarch of which is ultimately the Head of State of Niue).
Around above between the two, the inscription PUBLIC SEAL OF NIUE. Below that, a ribbon carries the motto ATUA NIUE TUKULAGI on two lines, below which two crossed katoua (Niue fighting clubs).
Around left, the metal content 1oz 9999 GOLD (one troy ounce of 99.99% gold); around right, the face value 100 DOLLARS.
Separated from this by a beaded ring is a wide rim displaying symbols of the British monarchy: the union rose, the lion of England, the harp of Ireland, and the lion of Scotland. In the lower part of the rim, the date of issue 2023. |

Reverse | |
The reverse of the coin features at its centre the Crown of Saint Edward. Named after Saint Edward the Confessor, one of the last Anglo-Saxon kings of England (1042 - 5 January 1066), this crown has been traditionally used to crown English and British monarchs at their coronations since the 13th century (with a two-century gap between 1689 and 1911). A white diamond has been set into the centre of the crown.
In ribbons surrounding the crown, the inscriptions KING CHARLES III, LOYALTY, LOVE, and RESPECT.
In the background, two crossed sceptres - the Sovereign’s Sceptre with Cross, representing the monarch's temporal power (the sceptre features the enormous Cullinan I Diamond which, at 530.2 carats, is the largest colourless cut diamond in the world), and the Sovereign's Sceptre with Dove, the dove symbolising the Holy Ghost and the King’s spiritual role as Head of the Anglican Church.
As on the obverse, there is a wide rim displaying symbols of the British monarchy: the union rose, the lion of England, the harp of Ireland, and the lion of Scotland. |
