Five Dollars Gold 2015 Czech Traditions - Slovácko Verbuňk, Coin from Niue - detailed information

This coin was issued as part of a six-coin gold proof set by the Czech Mint, featuring Czech traditions recognised by the UNESCO Heritage List. It is in the signature "gold ducat" format of the mint, which is slightly heavier than a tenth-ounce.

The UNESCO organisation protects not only cities, national parks and other places of interest that have tangible form. There is also a list that contains the Masterpieces of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity. And the Czechs certainly have something to say about that! Our colourful history has created a series of unique cultural idiosyncrasies, and we have expanded the list by six exceptional traditions.

This coin is dedicated to the Slovácko Verbuňk - an improvised dance performed by boys and men living in the South Moravia and Zlín districts of the Czech Republic. The name of the dance is derived from the German term Werbung (changed into verbŭnk), meaning “recruitment”, reflecting its historical origins in the recruitment of dancers and soldiers for the military in the eighteenth century.Today, it is performed by folk dance groups in most towns and villages of the Slovácko region, mostly in connection with festivities, such as the annual Hody community celebration.
