Niue, a sovereign state in free association with New Zealand, uses two official legal tender currencies. The New Zealand Dollar is the circulation currency for daily transactions, while the government also authorises legal tender coins in the Niue Dollar currency for collector's purposes.
A number of mints issue a large variety of commemorative and collector coins under the authority of Niue. These coins are dedicated to historical or general popular culture themes not related to Niue itself. Many of them are in standard bullion sizes - such as a tenth ounce of gold (abbreviated as 1/10 oz Au, where "Au" comes from the Latin word for gold, Aurum).
This coin is part of the Mythical Creatures series of premium bullion coins by the Czech Mint and features the legendary Sphinx.
The Mint says about it: "The tenth gold coin of the Czech Mint from the Mythical Creatures series is dedicated to the Sphinx. In the Egyptian world, the Sphinx is a mysterious creature with the body of a lion and the noble face of a Pharaoh. She is a symbol of power, silence and patience and is said to measure the time left to mankind.
The Greek Sphinx was also powerful and mysterious, but by no means patient. A monster with the head and chest of a naked woman, the body of a lion, the tail of a snake and the wings of an eagle, lived near the city of Thebes and harassed passers-by with intricate riddles. Those who did not know the answer paid with their lives. A puzzle that every young child knows today was only solved by the mythical Oedipus. What creature walks on all fours at morning, two at noon and three at night? The man who toddles in childhood, walks upright as an adult and uses a stick in old age.
The defeated Sphinx committed suicide by throwing herself into the sea, where she drowned..."
The reverse of the coin was designed by Mária Filová, and the obverse by Asamat Baltaev. |
