Niue, a sovereign state in free association with New Zealand, uses two official legal tender currencies. The New Zealand Dollar is the circulation currency for daily transactions, while the government also authorises legal tender coins in the Niue Dollar currency for collector's purposes. A number of mints issue a large variety of commemorative and collector coins under the authority of Niue. These coins are dedicated to historical or general popular culture themes not related to Niue itself. Many of them are in standard bullion sizes - such as a tenth ounce of gold (abbreviated as 1/10 oz Au, where "Au" comes from the Latin word for gold, Aurum). This coin is part of the Mythical Creatures series of premium bullion coins by the Czech Mint and features the Harpy. The Greek poet Hésiodos, famous as a chronicler of the stories of ancient mythology, speaks of three harpies - half women, half birds of prey. They were Alléktó (Gale), Ókypeté and Kelainó (Dizzying), to which Hésiod's more famous contemporary Homer added Podarga. Together they were the personification of wind and storm. Later, harpies became ubiquitous evil beings - demons who persecute good people and it is not without interest that today they do not live only in legends. When the first Spanish conquerors arrived in the Amazon, they saw huge birds with human-like heads in the treetops. These were eagles whose claws are larger than a bear's and whose wings have a span of over two meters. No wonder they were called harpy. | ||||||
