Niue, a sovereign state in free association with New Zealand, uses two official legal tender currencies. The New Zealand Dollar is the circulation currency for daily transactions, while the government also authorises legal tender coins in the Niue Dollar currency for collector's purposes.
A number of mints issue a large variety of commemorative and collector coins under the authority of Niue. These coins are dedicated to historical or general popular culture themes not related to Niue itself. Many of them are in standard bullion sizes - such as one ounce of gold (abbreviated as 1 oz Au, where "Au" comes from the Latin word for gold, Aurum).
This coin is part of the first release in the Seasons series which represents the different seasons with a nature view during that season; it depicts a fox and is dedicated to Autumn.
The red fox is one of the most common and versatile wild animal species. With its characteristic red fur and slender build, the red fox is a skilled hunter and can thrive in a variety of habitats, from forests to steppes to urban areas.
Downies says about the coin: "The red fox was introduced into Australia in the 1870s for recreational hunting and is now found in all states and territories except Tasmania. The splendour of the season is beautifully accentuated against the gold background, while two meticulously crafted emperor moths gracefully add the final flourish!" |
