Niue, a sovereign state in free association with New Zealand, uses two official legal tender currencies. The New Zealand Dollar is the circulation currency for daily transactions, while the government also authorises legal tender coins in the Niue Dollar currency for collector's purposes.

A number of mints issue a large variety of commemorative, bullion and collector coins under the authority of Niue. These coins are dedicated to historical or general popular culture themes not related to Niue itself. Many of them are in standard bullion sizes - typically, one ounce of silver (abbreviated as 1 oz Ag, where "Ag" comes from the Latin word for silver, Argentum). Many of these feature famous movie characters.

This coin is part of a New Zealand Mint series dedicated to characters from Disney movies, and is the first in a new series called "80 Years Fantasia".

The Mint says about it:
On the occasion of the 80th anniversary of the Disney cartoon "Fantasia", the New Zealand Mint has issued this coin struck from one ounce of 99.9% pure silver in colour. It shows Mickey as the sorcerer's apprentice, sitting dozing on a chair. The scene is from the segment "The Sorcerer's Apprentice" from the animated film "Fantasia", which celebrated its premiere in November 1940.

The film is based on the poem "The Sorcerer's Apprentice" by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe about a young man who abuses magic and can no longer control it. Mickey also abuses magic in the film and causes great chaos.
