Niue, a sovereign state in free association with New Zealand, uses two official legal tender currencies. The New Zealand Dollar is the circulation currency for daily transactions, while the government also authorises legal tender coins in the Niue Dollar currency for collector's purposes.

A number of mints issue a large variety of commemorative, bullion and collector coins under the authority of Niue. These coins are dedicated to historical or general popular culture themes not related to Niue itself. Many of them are in standard bullion sizes - typically, one ounce of silver (abbreviated as 1 oz Ag, where "Ag" comes from the Latin word for silver, Argentum). Many of these feature various animals.

This coin is the fourth issue in the Dog Breeds series of coloured silver coins by the Czech Mint and features the Golden Retriever.

The Mint says about it:
With the development of firearms, as hunting declined, it became the task of dogs to track down shot game and bring it to the hunter. Thus the breeds known as retrievers, or carriers, were born. The most famous of the retrievers was bred in the late 19th century by Dudley Marjoribanks. The Scottish lord, who was an avid waterfowl hunter, wanted the perfect hunting dog with a great sense of smell, pleasant appearance and good qualities. His breeding efforts were crowned with success.

The Golden Retriever, named after the vibrant shade of its coat, is energetic, strong and active, yet intelligent, obedient and gentle. As hunting pleasures disappeared from modern society, hunting helpers became mostly family dogs. Because of their affectionate and even-tempered nature, they are now kept as pets and companions that get along well with all members of the household - including visitors and cats. Golden Retrievers are also often used as guide or assistance dogs.
