Niue, a sovereign state in free association with New Zealand, uses two official legal tender currencies. The New Zealand Dollar is the circulation currency for daily transactions, while the government also authorises legal tender coins in the Niue Dollar currency for collector's purposes.
A number of mints issue a large variety of commemorative, bullion and collector coins under the authority of Niue. These coins are dedicated to historical or general popular culture themes not related to Niue itself. Many of them are in standard bullion sizes - typically, one ounce of silver (abbreviated as 1 oz Ag, where "Ag" comes from the Latin word for silver, Argentum). Many of these feature famous movie characters.
This coin is part of a New Zealand Mint series dedicated to "Disney Princesses" - characters from famous movies.
Mulan (traditional Chinese: 木蘭; simplified Chinese: 木兰) is a legendary folk heroine from the Northern and Southern dynasties era (4th to 6th century AD) of Chinese history. According to legend, Mulan took her aged father's place in the conscription for the army by disguising herself as a man. After prolonged and distinguished military service against nomadic hordes beyond the northern frontier, Mulan is honoured by the emperor but declines a position of high office. She retires to her home town, where she is reunited with her family and reveals her sex, much to the astonishment of her comrades.
The Mint says about the coin: "This beautiful 1oz pure silver Disney Mulan coin for 2021 celebrates the eighth Disney Princess, heroine and warrior. Known for her grace and courage, the coin shows a water-coloured image of these two sides of Mulan, capturing her delicate loveliness and strong will. Her name in English and Chinese appears in a red accent for a touch of drama. The engraved background of blossoms and landscapes complements the design. This officially licensed coin is presented in themed book-style packaging adorned with more delightful images of Disney’s Mulan against a beautiful, scenic backdrop. The Chinese characters for loyal, brave and true are a delightful addition to the design. The coin’s Certificate of Authenticity is printed on the packaging, confirming it as a legal tender coin with a limited mintage of 2,000. The coin’s unique number in the mintage features on the back." |
