Silver Kilo 2023 King Charles III Coronation, Coin from Samoa - detailed information

The obverse of the coin displays the bust of King Charles III, which depicts him bare-headed (uncrowned) and wearing a suit and tie, facing left.

Below the shoulder truncation in tiny letters, the artist's initials DT (for Dan Thorne).

Given that Samoa has been a republic since it gained independence in 1962, it is unclear why the King's effigy is displayed on the coin.

Below the portrait, a small Coat of Arms of Samoa. It consists of a shield, the lower two-thirds of which have five stars representing the constellation of the Southern Cross; the upper third depicts a beach and a coconut palm. The shield is surmounted by a cross with rays radiating from its centre, and is superimposed on two concentric circles representing the world, and an olive branch wreath - as in the United Nations Badge. On a ribbon below, the motto FA'AVAE I LE ATUA SAMOA, meaning "God be the Foundation of Samoa".

Around the portrait and the coat of arms, the face value, date of issue, the name of the king, and the country: 25 DOLLARS - 2023 - CHARLES III - SAMOA -.

Above, the inscription THE CORONATION OF KING CHARLES III, below which 6TH MAY 2023.

Below, at centre a unique serial number in the form of XXX/150. Below left, 1000 g (one kilogram). Below right, Ag 999 (99.9% silver).

The coin is shaped like the Imperial Crown, in its depiction as Saint Edward's Crown. Below the cross on top, the King's royal cypher C III R (for Carolus III Rex), itself crowned with the Imperial Crown in its depiction as the Tudor Crown.

The reverse design is coloured and depicts St Edward's Crown, used for the coronation of British monarchs, with coloured crystal inserts.
