Tokelau, known previously as the Tokelau Islands, is a dependent territory of New Zealand in the southern Pacific Ocean. It uses the New Zealand Dollar as circulation currency, but has been issuing a variety if non-circulating coins since 1978. These are denominated in "Tala" (the local word for Dollar) and cents.
The gold ounce is an internationally popular format, and is denominated as One Hundred Dollars.
The Royal Portraits gold coin is a tribute to Britain’s longest reigning monarch Queen Elizabeth II. The design depicts the new Jody Clark portrait and five other images of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II from young to old.
Since 1952, Elizabeth II has been the constitutional monarch of 16 Commonwealth Realms-designated sovereign states. In addition she is head of the 53-nation Commonwealth of Nations and secular head of the Anglican Church of England. Queen Elizabeth II is the longest reigning monarch in history. |

Obverse | |
The obverse of the coin depicts the crowned old bust of Queen Elizabeth II facing right, wearing the Royal Diamond Diadem crown worn for her Coronation (effigy known as the "Fifth Portrait" worldwide but "Sixth Portrait" in Australia, where the Queen's portrait by Vladimir Gottwald was fifth).
The Queen also wears the Coronation Necklace; originally made for Queen Victoria in 1858, it was also worn at the coronations (as Queen's Consort) of Queen Alexandra in 1902, Queen Mary in 1911 and Queen Elizabeth (the Queen mother) in 1937.
Unlike on British coinage, the effigy is "uncouped" (includes the Queen's shoulders). In small letters on the left, the artist's initials JC (for Jody Clark).
Running continuously around the rim is the monarch's legend, the date of issue and the face value: 100 DOLLARS · 2020 TOKELAU · ELIZABETH II · 1oz 9999 GOLD.
The inscription around the rim also incorporates the precious metal content - one troy ounce of 99.99% gold.
Below the portrait is a representation of the national flag of Tokelau. |
