Tokelau, known previously as the Tokelau Islands, is a dependent territory of New Zealand in the southern Pacific Ocean. It uses the New Zealand Dollar as circulation currency, but has been issuing a variety of non-circulating coins since 1978. These are denominated in dollars or "Tala" (the local word for dollar) and cents.
The country has also authorised some foreign mints to issue non circulating bullion coins under its jurisdiction, such as this 1 oz (one ounce) gold coin.
This coin is part of the Vivat Humanitas (long live humanity) series issued by the Pressburg Mint based in Bratislava, the capital of Slovakia.
The mint says about it: The Vivat Humanitas series celebrates achievements of humankind. This year’s release focuses on our ever-present fascination with the night sky. In the times of ancient civilizations, primitive astrology helped tribes navigate and now, our interstellar probes have already traveled outside the Solar system. Whatever lies in the infinite darkness of space completely captures our imagination and forces us to advance in this field. |
