Tokelau, known previously as the Tokelau Islands, is a dependent territory of New Zealand in the southern Pacific Ocean. It uses the New Zealand Dollar as circulation currency, but has been issuing a variety of non-circulating coins since 1978. These are denominated in dollars or "Tala" (the local word for dollar) and cents.
The country has also authorised some foreign mints to issue non circulating coins under its jurisdiction, such as this 1 oz (one ounce) silver coin.
This silver coin commemorates the 70th anniversary of Queen Elizabeth II's accession to the throne.
On 6 February 1952, at the age of 25, she ascended the throne for the first time and was crowned Queen on 2 June 1953 at Westminster Abbey. The ceremony, with the exception of the anointing and communion, was televised for the first time. Since then, Elizabeth II has been the constitutional monarch of 16 sovereign states known as "Commonwealth Realms", including their territories and dependent areas. She is also head of the Commonwealth of Nations, which comprises 53 states, and secular head of the Anglican Church of England. Queen Elizabeth II was the longest reigning monarch as at the time the coin was issued. |
