Obverse
United Kingdom / Crown 1960 - obverse photo

The obverse of the coin shows the laureate young bust of Queen Elizabeth II facing right - her effigy known as the "First Portrait". The laurel wreath in the Queen's hair is tied with a ribbon with two ends flowing behind.

The designer's initials, M.G. (for Mary Gillick) appear incuse on the base of the shoulder truncation, and can be seen when the coin is viewed at an angle.

The monarch's legend runs continuously all around the bust: ELIZABETH II DEI GRATIA REGINA F. D. FIVE SHILLINGS. Translated from Latin: Elizabeth the Second, by the Grace of God, Queen, Defender of the Faith.

Obverse Inscription ELIZABETH II DEI GRATIA REGINA F. D. FIVE SHILLINGS
Reverse
United Kingdom / Crown 1960 - reverse photo

The reverse features the representations of the constituent parts of the United Kingdom. Four flat topped shields form a diagonal cross around the Crown of Saint Edward; the shields bear the arms of England (top left and bottom right, with three lions passant gardant), Scotland (top right, a lion rampant within a double frame) and Ireland (bottom left, a harp). Between the shield are the floral symbols: a rose for England, shamrock for Northern Ireland, leek for Wales and thistle for Scotland.

The shield of England is repeated because Wales cannot be represented by a Coat of Arms as it does not have one.

The leek is below and divides the date 1960.

The initials of the artists are in small letters below the lower left shield EF for Edgar Fuller, and below the lower right shield CT for Cecil Thomas.

The value and denomination are on the obverse.

Notes

The reverse design is a re-issue of the 1953 Coronation Crown, which was issued again in 2014 for the first birthday of Prince George.
