Coin | One Dollar 2019 Welcome Stranger Nugget |
---|
|
The one dollar coin denomination (written as $1) was introduced in Australia in 1984, replacing the earlier banknotes. The original reverse design by Stuart Devlin on circulating coins has not been changed since its introduction. The denomination is also often used to issue circulating commemorative coins with various reverses.
The denomination is also used by both the Royal Australian Mint and the Perth Mint to issue an extensive range of collector coins which are legal tender in Australia but are not intended for circulation - such as this one. The coin is larger than the normal $1 coins.
This commemorative dollar is part of the first issue in the Australian Nugget Series from the Perth Mint. With it, the mint marks 150 years since the discovery of the Welcome Stranger natural gold nugget.
The Welcome Stranger is the biggest alluvial gold nugget found, which had a calculated refined weight of 97.14 kilograms (3,123 ozt). It measured 61 by 31 cm and was discovered by prospectors John Deason and Richard Oates on 5 February 1869 at Moliagul, Victoria, Australia.
The reverses of the coins in the series are based on a 1986 four-coin set issued by the Perth Mint, the coins in which were designed by Stuart Devlin. |
