Coin | Silver Two Ounces 2019 Koi Fish |
---|
|
The Australian two ounces silver piece (abbreviated as 2 oz and designated with Ag for "silver") is a bullion and commemorative coin format. Uniquely, in Australia there are two mints authorised to strike legal tender: the Royal Australian Mint (which also makes the country's circulating coinage) and the Perth Mint which only makes collector and bullion coins, as well as other bullion products.
Both mints endeavour to create coins with attractive designs, and to introduce new designs and themes often, in order to raise the numismatic value of the coins over the value of previous metal used.
The Mint says about this coin: Combining symbols of luck, prosperity, ambition and wealth, this innovative figure eight-shaped coin is a fitting tribute to Chinese culture and traditions. Thanks to their ability to swim upstream, koi fish have long represented perseverance and strength of purpose in eastern cultures. As such they have become a symbol of good luck, abundance, courage, independence and ambition. The number eight is also considered extremely lucky as the Chinese word for "eight" sounds similar to "good fortune" or "money". |

Obverse | |
The obverse of the coin depicts at its centre the crowned old head of Queen Elizabeth II facing right, wearing the Royal Diamond Diadem crown and the Victoria Coronation necklace worn for her Coronation. This is her effigy known as the "Fifth Portrait" worldwide and "Sixth Portrait" in Australia, in "uncouped" version - showing the Queen's shoulders and not terminating at the neck as the normal version. The effigy is very small, being in the centre of the figure-eight shape of the coin. There are no designer's initials on the portrait.
Around above, the monarch's legend ELIZABETH II AUSTRALIA; around below, the precious metal content, date of issue and face value: 2oz 9999 Ag 2019 2 DOLLARS. "2 oz 9999 Ag" means "two ounces of 99.99% silver" - Ag is abbreviated from the Latin word for silver, Argentum.
The rings around the two holes are decorated with a pattern in which the figure 8 is repeated multiple times. |

There is no inscription. The face value and the precious metal content are on the obverse. |
