The Australian tenth-ounce gold piece (abbreviated as 1/10 oz and designated with Au for "gold") is a bullion coin format. Uniquely, in Australia there are two mints authorised to strike legal tender: the Royal Australian Mint (which also makes the country's circulating coinage) and the Perth Mint which only makes collector and bullion coins, as well as other bullion products.
Both mints endeavour to create coins with attractive designs, and to introduce new designs and themes often, in order to raise the numismatic value of the coins over the value of previous metal used.
This 1/10 oz gold bullion coin is part of the 30th Anniversary of the Australian Kookaburra coin range by the Perth Mint.
First issued by The Perth Mint in 1990, the Australian Kookaburra is an iconic Australian coin series. Each year, the series portrays a new artistic impression of the kookaburra, a bird with an unmistakable laughing call that’s synonymous with Australia - from the outback to the back yard. This 2020 release marks the Kookaburra’s 30th anniversary.
This is the first time the Perth Mint has issued a 1/10 oz Gold Kookaburra. Due to the small size of the coin, it is different from the rest of this year's range. While the rest of the coins have both a new 2020 design and the 1990 design (on the obverse), the 1/10 oz Gold Kookaburra only has Stuart Devlin's original design from the first issue of the coins in 1990. |
