Gold Ounce 2020 Zuytdorp Shipwreck, Coin from Australia
CoinGold Ounce 2020 Zuytdorp Shipwreck

The Australian one-ounce gold piece (abbreviated as 1 oz and designated with Au for "gold") is a bullion coin format. Uniquely, in Australia there are two mints authorised to strike legal tender: the Royal Australian Mint (which also makes the country's circulating coinage) and the Perth Mint which only makes collector and bullion coins, as well as other bullion products.

Both mints endeavour to create coins with attractive designs, and to introduce new designs and themes often, in order to raise the numismatic value of the coins over the value of previous metal used.

The 2020 Zuytdorp triangular one-ounce gold coin is the third release in the Australian Shipwreck series. The Zuytdorp follows on from the first two popular releases in the series featuring the Batavia and the Gilt Dragon. The coins were issued in Brilliant Uncirculated grade.

The exquisite design of the reverse conveys two scenes to communicate the journey of the Zuytdorp. With the image of the ship viewed upright, the Zuytdorp is shown setting sail in its full glory. Flipping the coin to view the text upright depicts the ship in its final state capsized shortly after wrecking in 1712. The obverse design depicts scenes from its dramatic story.

In 1711, a Dutch East India Company trading ship, the Zuytdorp (meaning "South Village"), set out from the Netherlands for Batavia (now Jakarta) on what was to be its third and final voyage. On board were more than 200 men and precious cargo comprising 250,000 silver coins.

After nearly seven months at sea with scurvy claiming the lives of many men, the Zuytdorp continued its journey from the Cape of Good Hope via the Indian Ocean. Zuytdorp never arrived at Batavia and with no knowledge of where it may have sunk or whether it had been taken by pirates, no search was ever made. The wreck was found more than 200 years later off the coast of Western Australia along a stretch now known as the Zuytdorp Cliffs. Divers of the wreck have reported a "Carpet of Silver" - the result of thousands of silver coins strewn along the ocean floor. These coins inscribed with "Zeeland" and "1711" helped identify the wreck as the ill-fated Zuytdorp, which still abounds in mystery today.

The obverse of the coin depicts the crowned old bust of Queen Elizabeth II facing right, wearing the Royal Diamond Diadem crown worn for her Coronation (effigy known as the "Fifth Portrait" worldwide but "Sixth Portrait" in Australia, where the Queen's portrait by Vladimir Gottwald was fifth).

The Queen also wears the Coronation Necklace; originally made for Queen Victoria in 1858, it was also worn at the coronations (as Queen's Consort) of Queen Alexandra in 1902, Queen Mary in 1911 and Queen Elizabeth (the Queen mother) in 1937.

Unlike on British coinage, the effigy includes the Queen's shoulders. On regular circulating coins it extends almost to the rim of the coin. Consequently, on them the legend does not run continuously around the rim. On commemorative coins the effigy is smaller and the value and denomination are below.

The artist's initials JC (for Jody Clark) are incuse in tiny letters in the left field of the effigy (on the Queen's right shoulder, near the rim).

Around the effigy is the monarch's legend and the date: ELIZABETH II · AUSTRALIA 2020 ONE HUNDRED DOLLARS.

The effigy and legend of the monarch are in a small circle above, with the face value superimposed on the image below, near the base of the triangle.

The background image, which takes most of the surface of the obverse, depicts the stylised representation of a shipwreck, and survivors in a small boat in the ocean. In the foreground, a man clinging to a cliff-face, rocks, and a skeleton, below which strewn on the ground Dutch coins dated 1711.

The rim is plain.

Within a plain rim, the triangular design has an ornamental border comprised of elements from artwork by Adriaan de Jong: on top, the logo of the Dutch East India Company logo, below left a male figure holding a representation of the Coat of Arms of the village of Zuiddorpe in the Netherlands, and below right a female figure holding a representation of the Coat of Arms of the province of Zeeland in the Netherlands, with ribbons, flowers and fruit on left and right.

At centre, the Zuytdorp vessel in full sail.

The inscriptions are upside down; when the coin is inverted, these read: 1 oz .9999 Au (one ounce of 99.99% gold; Au is abbreviated from the Latin Aurum), ZUYTDORP in a ribbon, and 1712.

The face value and denomination are on the obverse.
