The Australian one-ounce gold piece (abbreviated as 1 oz and designated with Au for "gold") is a bullion coin format. Uniquely, in Australia there are two mints authorised to strike legal tender: the Royal Australian Mint (which also makes the country's circulating coinage) and the Perth Mint which only makes collector and bullion coins, as well as other bullion products.
Both mints endeavour to create coins with attractive designs, and to introduce new designs and themes often, in order to raise the numismatic value of the coins over the value of previous metal used.
This coin is part of a premium rectangular bullion coin series featuring a Chinese dragon, issued by the Perth Mint with a new design every year.
The Mint says about it: Revered as the embodiment of the Chinese emperor, embraced as a personal talisman - the Oriental dragon has always exerted a powerful influence over mankind’s imagination. Now you can savour the benevolence of the world’s favourite mythological creature with this stunning rectangle-shaped gold coin.
The coin’s reverse portrays the serpentine form of a dragon that’s been revered in Chinese culture for millennia as a potent symbol of auspicious powers. It can be seen chasing a flaming pearl, said to have the supernatural ability to grant people their deepest desires. |

The obverse of the coins shows the crowned mature head of Queen Elizabeth II facing right (her effigy known as the "Fourth Portrait"). The Queen wears the "Girls of Great Britain and Ireland" diamond tiara, a wedding gift from Queen Mary (Her Majesty's grandmother) in 1947 - which she also has on the Machin and the Gottwald portraits.
In small letters below the head, the artist's initials IRB (for Ian Rank-Broadley).
The background is a starburst of rays radiating out from the centre of the portrait.
Above the effigy is the monarch's legend, on two lines separated by a horizontal line: ELIZABETH II AUSTRALIA, below which the precious metal content: 1oz 9999 Au (one troy ounce of 99.99% gold; Au is abbreviated from Argentum, the Latin word for gold).
Below the effigy, also on two lines separated by a horizontal line, the face value and date of issue: 100 DOLLARS 2018. |
