The one dollar coin denomination (written as $1) was introduced in Australia in 1984, replacing the earlier banknotes. The original definitive type featuring five kangaroos has not been changed since its introduction and is still issued regularly. Apart from the regular design, the Royal Australian Mint issues a large variety of circulating commemorative one dollar coins which have the same specifications and circulate in parallel with the definitive type - such as this one. This coin is part of a ten-coin series featuring Aussie Big Things - a traditional Australian form of a road-side attraction, and depicts The Big Blue Heeler. The Big Blue Heeler statue commemorates a type of Australian Cattle Dog believed to have originated in the 1840s in Muswellbrook, a town in the Upper Hunter region of New South Wales. Originally bred by cattle farmers by crossing the dingo with the Northumberland Blue Merle, this working dog can handle high temperatures while quietly and swiftly herding cattle. The series is a corporate partnership between the Royal Australian Mint and Australia Post. The coins were issued individually packaged, or in sets. | ||||||
