One Dollar 2021 X - Xanthorrhoea, Coin from Australia
CoinOne Dollar 2021 X - Xanthorrhoea

This circulating commemorative dollar coin is part of the The Great Aussie Coin Hunt 2 campaign - a series of 26 different $1 coins where each features a letter of the English alphabet and an Australian symbol starting with that letter. The coin for the letter X features the Xanthorrhoea tree.

X is for Xanthorrhoea - part of more than 60 "grass trees" endemic to Australia. While not all Australians may be able to correctly name the Xanthorrhoea, chances are most have seen one when out walking in coastal heaths or forests. Xanthorrhoea is a remarkable, perennial species that can live for up to 450 years! One of the most incredible qualities of Xanthorrhoea is its ability to bounce back from bushfire. Not only can it survive, it often responds by flowering profusely. By retaining its dead leaves around its trunk, the Xanthorrhoea defends itself using thermal insulation, protecting the plant’s inner stem.

Obverse
Australia / One Dollar 2021 X - Xanthorrhoea - obverse photo

The obverse of the coin depicts the crowned old bust of Queen Elizabeth II facing right, wearing the Royal Diamond Diadem crown worn for her Coronation (effigy known as the "Fifth Portrait" worldwide but "Sixth Portrait" in Australia, where the Queen's portrait by Vladimir Gottwald was fifth).

The Queen also wears the Coronation Necklace; originally made for Queen Victoria in 1858, it was also worn at the coronations (as Queen's Consort) of Queen Alexandra in 1902, Queen Mary in 1911 and Queen Elizabeth (the Queen mother) in 1937.

Unlike on British coinage, the effigy is "uncouped" (includes the Queen's shoulders) and extends almost to the rim of the coin; consequently, the legend does not run continuously around the rim.

The artist's initials JC (for Jody Clark) are incuse in tiny letters in the left field of the effigy (on the Queen's right shoulder, near the rim).

Around the effigy is the monarch's legend and the date: ELIZABETH II · AUSTRALIA 2021.
