Silver Quarter Ounce 2022 Year of the Tiger, Coin from Australia
CoinSilver Quarter Ounce 2022 Year of the Tiger

The Australian quarter ounce silver piece (abbreviated as 1/4 oz and designated with Ag for "silver") is a bullion and commemorative coin format; it has face value of 25 cents. Uniquely, in Australia there are two mints authorised to strike legal tender: the Royal Australian Mint (which also makes the country's circulating coinage) and the Perth Mint which only makes collector and bullion coins, as well as other bullion products.

Both mints endeavour to create coins with attractive designs, and to introduce new designs and themes often, in order to raise the numismatic value of the coins over the value of previous metal used.

This quarter-ounce silver coin with a face value of 25 cents was issued as part of the Perth Mint's Lunar Series III to mark the Chinese Year of the Tiger (1 February 2022 to 21 January 2023), and is a Sydney Money Expo Special Edition.

The Mint says about it:
The Perth Mint issues low mintage coins to mark our support for ANDA’s Money Expo events around Australia. Struck from 1/4oz of silver with a coloured design, this special Australian Lunar coin celebrates the Sydney Money Expo in October 2021.

The tiger is the third animal symbol in the lunar zodiac. Those born under the sign of the tiger in 2022, 2010, 1998, 1986, 1974 and each 12th preceding year are said to be natural leaders blessed with courage, charm and confidence. The coin’s coloured design represents a tiger cub following it's proud and protective parent across a rocky terrain featuring ferns and bamboo.

Obverse

The obverse of the coin depicts the crowned old head of Queen Elizabeth II facing right, wearing the Royal Diamond Diadem crown and the Victoria Coronation necklace worn for her Coronation. This is her effigy known as the "Fifth Portrait" worldwide and "Sixth Portrait" in Australia, in "uncouped" version - showing the Queen's shoulders and not terminating at the neck as the normal version.

On the left, in small letters on the Queen's shoulder, the artist's initials J.C (for Jody Clark).

Running continuously around the rim is the monarch's legend and the face value: ELIZABETH II AUSTRALIA 1/2oz 9999 Ag 25 CENTS.

The inscription around the rim also incorporates the precious metal content. "1/4 oz 9999 Ag" means "one quarter of a troy ounce of 99.99% silver" - Ag is abbreviated from the Latin word for silver, Argentum.
