The Australian quarter ounce silver piece (abbreviated as 1/4 oz and designated with Ag for "silver") is a bullion and commemorative coin format; it has face value of 25 cents. Uniquely, in Australia there are two mints authorised to strike legal tender: the Royal Australian Mint (which also makes the country's circulating coinage) and the Perth Mint which only makes collector and bullion coins, as well as other bullion products.
Both mints endeavour to create coins with attractive designs, and to introduce new designs and themes often, in order to raise the numismatic value of the coins over the value of previous metal used.
This five-ounce silver coin with a face value of $8 was issued as part of the Perth Mint's Lunar Series III to mark the 2024 Chinese Year of the Dragon (10 February 2024 - 28 January 2025). It was a special issue for the 2024 ANDA Melbourne Money Expo (10 - 11 February 2024).
The mint says about it:
Each animal of the lunar zodiac is said to bestow its dominant characteristics on those born during its rule. The fifth of 12 animals in the calendar, the dragon bestows bravery, ambition, intelligence, and good fortune on those born under its influence in 1952, 1964, 1976, 1988, 2000, 2012 and 2024. |

The obverse of the coin depicts the crowned old head of Queen Elizabeth II facing right, wearing the Royal Diamond Diadem crown and the Victoria Coronation necklace worn for her Coronation. This is her effigy known as the "Fifth Portrait" worldwide and "Sixth Portrait" in Australia, in "uncouped" version - showing the Queen's shoulders and not terminating at the neck as the normal version.
On the left, in small letters on the Queen's shoulder, the artist's initials J.C (for Jody Clark).
Running continuously around the rim is the monarch's legend and the face value: ELIZABETH II 1952 - 2022 · AUSTRALIA · 1/4oz 9999 Ag 25 CENTS ·.
The legend is interrupted by the "memorial" inclusion of the dates of the Queen's reign, 1952 - 2022.
The inscription around the rim also incorporates the precious metal content. "1/4oz 9999 Ag" means "one quarter of a troy ounce of 99.99% silver" - Ag is abbreviated from the Latin word for silver, Argentum. |

The reverse of the coin is coloured portrays a Chinese mythical dragon facing the viewer, with stylised waves and fog - allusions to its control of the elements, and a flaming pearl of wisdom.
Below it, the Chinese character for "dragon": 龍, below which DRAGON and 2024.
The mint mark of the Perth Mint is below right; instead of the traditional P, it is P125, celebrating the 125th anniversary of the mint. The designer's initials IJ (for Ing Ing Jong) are above right.
The face value and the precious metal content are on the obverse. |
