Niue, a sovereign state in free association with New Zealand, uses two official legal tender currencies. The New Zealand Dollar is the circulation currency for daily transactions, while the government also authorises legal tender coins in the Niue Dollar currency for collector's purposes.

A number of mints issue a large variety of commemorative, bullion and collector coins under the authority of Niue. These coins are dedicated to historical or general popular culture themes not related to Niue itself. Many of them are in standard bullion sizes - for example, two ounces of silver (abbreviated as 2 oz Ag, where "Ag" comes from the Latin word for silver, Argentum).

The design concept for the Dalgona Silver Honeycomb Umbrella Shaped Coin is based on a South Korean drama series that came to television in 2021. The show focuses on 456 contestants in a fictional game, each one attempting to survive a series of challenges to win 45.6 billion Won, or roughly $40 million (USD). Among the challenges the competitors must complete is removing the umbrella from the centre of a Dalgona Honeybomb. This must be done in a certain amount of time and the shape cannot be broken in the process. Failure to complete the challenge will not only cost contestants a shot at the prize money, but will also cost them their lives.

The centre of the coin is an umbrella shape (12.208 g) which is detachable from the outer ring (50 g); both are honey coloured, reflecting the accurate colour of the thin, sugar candy treats that inspired the design of the coins.
