Coin | Gold Quarter Ounce 2024 The Four Nations |
---|
|
Like many other mints, the Royal Mint issues bullion coins in precious metals, having much higher intrinsic value than their face value. The quarter ounce (1/4 oz) gold coins are denominated as Twenty-five Pounds (£25).
The coins are legal tender but are not intended for circulation. They are targeted at bullion investors or collectors who appreciate the special editions as pieces of art. The coins are typically "one-year" types usually issued in parallel with other denominations with the same reverse designs.
This bullion coin is a re-issue of the 2016 design for the last round one-pound coin, and is part of a series called Coins for a Kingdom.
The reverse was designed by Gregory Kenneth Cameron, the Anglican bishop of the Diocese of St Asaph in Wales; it represents the United Kingdom and features the mythical "heraldic beasts" symbolic of each of its parts: the lion of England, the dragon of Wales, the unicorn of Scotland and the stag of Northern Ireland, with the Imperial Crown at centre - which is now the Tudor Crown, updated from St Edward’s Crown to reflect the change in monarch (King Charles III has elected to have the Imperial Crown rendered as the Tudor Crown, unlike Queen Elizabeth II who had it as St Edward’s Crown during her reign). |

Obverse | |
The obverse of the coin displays the first definitive portrait of King Charles III, which shows his bare (uncrowned) head facing left.
Below the neck truncation in tiny letters, the artist's initials MJ (for Martin Jennings).
Around, the monarch's legend followed by the face value: CHARLES III · D · G · REX · F · D · 25 POUNDS ·. Translated from Latin, the legend means: Charles the Third, by the Grace of God, King, Defender of the Faith.
The obverse has a textured background ("guilloche" geometric pattern). |

Reverse | |
The reverse represents the United Kingdom and features the mythical "heraldic beasts" symbolic of each of its parts; the coin is divided into four sectors, showing respectively (clockwise from top) the lion of England, the unicorn of Scotland, the stag of Northern Ireland and the dragon of Wales - each beast slightly overlapping into a neighbouring sector. The Imperial Crown (depicted as the Tudor crown) is in a diamond at centre.
The designer's initials GKC (for Gregory Kenneth Cameron) are in the field under the Welsh dragon.
The background is textured with micro-dots.
Repeated multiple times around the rim in microtext, the inscription 1/4 OZ FINE GOLD · 999.9 · 2024 · (one quarter of a troy ounce of 99.99% gold, issued in 2024). |
