The British one pound (£1) coin is a circulating denomination of the Pound Sterling. The coin was introduced in 1983 to replace the Bank of England one pound note which ceased to be issued at the end of 1984. The original coin was round and was made of nickel-brass. A large number of reverse designs were issued in this format until it was discontinued in 2016. These designs represented in turn the United Kingdom as a whole, and its constituent parts: England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland. This last round £1 coin was meant as a "farewell" to the old format and issued in commemorative sets only (not for regular circulation); no coins of this type were issued into circulation. The reverse was designed by Gregory Kenneth Cameron, the Anglican bishop of the Diocese of St Asaph in Wales; it represents the United Kingdom and features the mythical "heraldic beasts" symbolic of each of its parts: the lion of England, the dragon of Wales, the unicorn of Scotland and the stag of Northern Ireland, with the Imperial Crown at centre. Coins of this type were not issued into regular circulation. | ||||||||||||
