Coin | Silver Ten Ounces 2024 Myths and Legends - King Arthur |

|
Like many other mints, the Royal Mint issues bullion coins in precious metals, having much higher intrinsic value than their face value. The ten ounce (10 oz) silver coins are denominated as ten pounds (£10).
The coins are legal tender but are not intended for circulation. They are targeted at bullion investors or collectors who appreciate the special editions as pieces of art. The coins are typically "one-year" types usually issued in parallel with smaller denominations with the same reverse designs.
This is the first design in the second part of the Myths and Legends range of bullion coins by the Royal Mint, and features legendary King Arthur.
The Royal Mint says about the coin: Invest in a legend of British folklore as the story of King Arthur inspires three new bullion coins in our collection dedicated to British myths and legends. The fabled king graces the first of these new releases, with Merlin and Morgan le Fay respectively featuring on the second and third of these coins.
The legend of King Arthur first appeared in the Welsh medieval chronicles of the ninth and tenth centuries and remains one of the most iconic figures within British mythology. The legend has evolved over the ages, with various narrative strands offering depictions of Arthur that range from a fierce warrior defending Britain against Saxon invaders to the noble leader of the Knights of the Round Table, which embodies the values of a chivalric society.
The reverse design, created by experienced illustrator David Lawrence, features King Arthur at its centre, who sits astride a horse and grasps Excalibur, his legendary sword. Camelot, home to the Knights of the Round Table and their noble leader, can be seen in the background. Struck in 999.9 fine silver, each ten-ounce edition of this King Arthur coin is finished to The Royal Mint’s bullion standard. |

The obverse of the coin displays the first definitive portrait of King Charles III, which shows his bare (uncrowned) head facing left.
Below the neck truncation in tiny letters, the artist's initials MJ (for Martin Jennings).
Around, the monarch's legend followed by the face value: CHARLES III · D · G · REX · F · D · 10 POUNDS ·. Translated from Latin, the legend means: Charles the Third, by the Grace of God, King, Defender of the Faith.
