Silver Ounce 2024 Myths and Legends - Beowulf and Grendel, Coin from United Kingdom - detailed information

Like many other mints, the Royal Mint issues bullion coins in precious metals, having much higher intrinsic value than their face value. The one ounce (1 oz) silver coins are denominated as either two pounds (£2) or five pounds (£5), depending on the occasion.

Initially, these were only of the Britannia type, but in 2015 the Royal Mint started to use the format for coins with other types of reverse designs, celebrating various aspects of British heritage.

The coins are legal tender but are not intended for circulation. They are targeted at bullion investors or collectors who appreciate the special editions as pieces of art.

This is the first design in the third part of the Myths and Legends range of coins by the Royal Mint; it features legendary characters Beowulf and Grendel.

The mint says about it:
A timeless British legend meets the best of British craftsmanship as Beowulf becomes the latest mythical figure to feature in our bullion coin collection inspired by myths and legends. This latest series commemorates the great fights in the epic Old English poem Beowulf. The first of these coins illustrates the catalyst of Beowulf’s heroic tale, his battle with the swamp monster Grendel.

The reverse of the coin features an illustration by David Lawrence that depicts the inciting incident of the epic poem, the battle of Beowulf and Grendel, and captures the heroic Beowulf ready to protect King Hrothgar’s subjects from the fearsome and murky Grendel.
