Coin | Platinum Ounce 2023 Myths and Legends - Robin Hood |
---|
|
Like many other mints, the Royal Mint issues bullion coins in precious metals, having much higher intrinsic value than their face value. The one ounce (1 oz) platinum coins are denominated as One Hundred Pounds (£100).
The coins are legal tender, but are not intended for circulation. They are targeted at bullion investors or collectors who appreciate the special editions as pieces of art. The coins are typically "one-year" types usually issued in parallel with other denominations with the same reverse designs.
This is the first design in the Myths and Legends range of bullion coins by the Royal Mint, and the first issue of the series in platinum.
The Mint says about the coin: Our new bullion coin collection, inspired by myths and legends, first explores the story of Robin Hood, beginning with the legend himself. Stories of this heroic rebel, who stole from the rich to give to the poor, have been spread far and wide since the fourteenth century. Two more coins inspired by the tale will follow, featuring the courageous heroine Maid Marian and Robin Hood’s trusted companion Little John.
Robin Hood is depicted with a bow in hand, ready to spring into action in Sherwood Forest, in a design by Jody Clark. He is accompanied by a portrait of Her Majesty The Queen on the coin’s obverse, also designed by Jody Clark. Struck in 999.5 fine platinum, each one ounce coin is finished to The Royal Mint’s bullion standard. |

Obverse | |
The obverse of the coin depicts the crowned old head of Queen Elizabeth II facing right, wearing the Royal Diamond Diadem crown worn for her Coronation (her effigy known as the "Fifth Portrait").
In small letters below the head, the artist's initials J.C (for Jody Clark).
Running continuously around the effigy is the monarch's legend: ELIZABETH II · D · G · REG · F · D · 100 POUNDS ·. Translated from Latin: Elizabeth the Second, by the Grace of God, Queen, Defender of the Faith, followed by the value and denomination in English.
The obverse has a textured background ("guilloche" geometric pattern). |

|
Reverse | |
The reverse of the coin depicts folk hero Robin Hood, in the branches of an oak tree, his longbow drawn and pointed downward. The background has a "micro-dot table texture".
Around, the inscription ROBIN HOOD · FINE PLATINUM · 999.5 · 2023. Below right, the designer's initials: JC (for Jody Clark).
The face value and denomination are on the obverse. |

Notes | Finish: bullion (Brilliant Uncirculated). Packaging: in individual coin capsule. Royal Mint Product code: MLRH231PC. Date of issue: 27 October 2022. Issue price: £989.84
Owing to the unfortunate tendency of some mints - the Royal Mint included - to issue future-dated coins, this coin is not exactly an error coin (considering that it was released like this intentionally) but is not right either. It is dated 2023, but features the effigy of Queen Elizabeth II who died in September 2022; the coin should have carried the portrait of King Charles III instead. |
