Silver Ounce 2024 Myths and Legends - Morgan le Fay, Bullion, Coin from United Kingdom - detailed information

Like many other mints, the Royal Mint issues bullion coins in precious metals, having much higher intrinsic value than their face value. The one ounce (1 oz) silver coins are denominated as either two pounds (£2) or five pounds (£5), depending on the occasion.

Initially, these were only of the Britannia type, but in 2015 the Royal Mint started to use the format for coins with other types of reverse designs, celebrating various aspects of British heritage.

The coins are legal tender but are not intended for circulation. They are targeted at bullion investors or collectors who appreciate the special editions as pieces of art.

This is the third design in the second part of the Myths and Legends range of coins by the Royal Mint; it features legendary enchantress Morgan le Fay.

The mint says about it:
Since first appearing in Geoffrey of Monmouth’s twelfth-century work Vita Merlini, Morgan le Fay has become a popular figure within Arthurian legend. Undergoing various interpretations and portrayals over the centuries, the character is commonly perceived as a dark and powerful enchantress by modern audiences.

In the early chronicles of Arthurian legend, Morgan le Fay appears as a benevolent healer and, in one instance, is said to transport King Arthur to the isle of Avalon and tend to his wounds following his final battle. Experienced coin designer David Lawrence has opted to portray the figure through a more sinister lens, wearing a winged headpiece and poised to inflict dark magic upon her enemies.
