The Australian one kilo gold piece (abbreviated as 1 kg and designated with Au for "gold") is a bullion coin format. Uniquely, in Australia there are two mints authorised to strike legal tender: the Royal Australian Mint (which also makes the country's circulating coinage) and the Perth Mint which only makes collector and bullion coins, as well as other bullion products. Both mints endeavour to create coins with attractive designs, and to introduce new designs and themes often, in order to raise the numismatic value of the coins over the value of previous metal used. This commemorative 1kg gold proof coin was issued to celebrate the Diamond Jubilee (60th anniversary of the accession to the throne) of Queen Elizabeth II. The mint says about it: The Queen is Head of State of the United Kingdom and 15 other Commonwealth realms. The elder daughter of King George VI and Queen Elizabeth, she was born in 1926, and married Prince Phillip, now the Duke of Edinburgh, in 1947. Her coronation took place in Westminster Abbey on 2 June 1953, and she has reigned through more than five decades of immense social change and development. Her Majesty has four children and eight grandchildren. | ||||||
