|Coin||Gold Ounce 2022 Super Pit|
The Australian one-ounce gold piece (abbreviated as 1 oz and designated with Au for "gold") is a bullion coin format. Uniquely, in Australia there are two mints authorised to strike legal tender: the Royal Australian Mint (which also makes the country's circulating coinage) and the Perth Mint which only makes collector and bullion coins, as well as other bullion products.
Both mints endeavour to create coins with attractive designs, and to introduce new designs and themes often, in order to raise the numismatic value of the coins over the value of previous metal used.
This gold bullion coin by the Perth Mint is part of a series of coins featuring the Super Pit, issued since 2019.
Discovered during the 1890s, the Golden Mile near Kalgoorlie was thought to be the richest square mile of gold reserves in the world. Most of its original workings were swallowed up during the 20th century with the creation of an enormous open cast pit, now measuring some 3.5 kilometres long, 1.5 kilometres wide and more than 600 metres deep. To this day, the Super Pit continues to produce remarkable quantities of gold.

The obverse of the coin depicts the crowned old head of Queen Elizabeth II facing right, wearing the Royal Diamond Diadem crown and the Victoria Coronation necklace worn for her Coronation. This is her effigy known as the "Fifth Portrait" worldwide and "Sixth Portrait" in Australia, in "uncouped" version - showing the Queen's shoulders and not terminating at the neck as the normal version.
On the left, in small letters on the Queen's shoulder, the artist's initials J.C (for Jody Clark).
Running continuously around the rim is the monarch's legend and the face value: ELIZABETH II AUSTRALIA · 100 DOLLARS ·.
The reverse of the coin portrays an artistic impression of a Komatsu excavator in the Super Pit open-cut mine, and a headframe, or winding tower, such as the one used at the nearby Mt Charlotte Underground Mine. On the right, the Perth Mint's P mint mark. Below the excavator on the right (above the D of GOLD), the designer's initials SR, for Sean Rogers.
Around above, the inscription SUPER PIT AUSTRALIA.
Around below, the date of issue and the precious metal content: 2022 1oz 9999 GOLD (one ounce of 99.99% gold).
