Coin | Gold Ounce 2023 Coat of Arms - Queensland |
---|
|
The Australian one-ounce gold piece (abbreviated as 1 oz and designated with Au for "gold") is a bullion coin format. Uniquely, in Australia there are two mints authorised to strike legal tender: the Royal Australian Mint (which also makes the country's circulating coinage) and the Perth Mint which only makes collector and bullion coins, as well as other bullion products.
Both mints endeavour to create coins with attractive designs, and to introduce new designs and themes often, in order to raise the numismatic value of the coins over the value of previous metal used.
This coin is the third release in a premium bullion coin series called Australia's Coat of Arms and bears a design inspired by the Coat of Arms of the state of Queensland. |

Obverse | |
The obverse of the coin shows, in a small circle on the left, the crowned old head of Queen Elizabeth II facing right, wearing the Royal Diamond Diadem crown and the Victoria Coronation necklace worn for her Coronation. This is her effigy known as the "Fifth Portrait" worldwide and "Sixth Portrait" in Australia, in "uncouped" version - showing the Queen's shoulders and not terminating at the neck as the normal version. On the left, in small letters on the Queen's shoulder, the artist's initials JC (for Jody Clark). Around above, the monarch's legend and the date of issue: ELIZABETH II 1952 - 2022 · AUSTRALIA 2023. The legend is interrupted by the "memorial" inclusion of the dates of the Queen's reign, 1952 - 2022.
Most of the obverse is taken by the image of a stag, which is one of the supporters of the Coat of Arms of Queensland. Visible in the background is a Maltese Cross overlaid with the Crown of Saint Edward, and a knight's helmet decorated with mantling (strips of cloth) - both also parts of the state Coat of Arms.
Around below left, the motto AUDAX AT FIDELIS - Latin motto which is on a ribbon below the Coat of Arms of the state, which means "Bold but faithful".
Around below right, an inscription specifying the precious metal content: 1 OUNCE .9999 Au (one troy ounce of 99.99% gold; Au is abbreviated from Aurum, the Latin word for gold). |

The reverse design features a brolga - a large bird which is one of the supporters of the Coat of Arms of Queensland. In the background, a bull and ram surrounded by wheat - symbols of the agricultural beginning of the state, and displayed on the Coat of Arms.
The designer's logo, a stylised A over B (for Aaron Baggio) is on the left.
On a shield above left, the face value and denomination: 100 DOLLARS, below which workman tools (spade and pick) symbolising the state’s prosperity - also present on the Coat of Arms.
In a ribbon below, the inscription QUEENSLAND. |
