The obverse of the coin displays the bust of King Charles III, which depicts him bare-headed (uncrowned) and wearing a suit and tie, facing left.

Below the shoulder truncation in tiny letters, the artist's initials DT (for Dan Thorne).

Around, the monarch's legend and the face value of the coin: CHARLES III AUSTRALIA · 100 DOLLARS ·.

The coin portrays the four mythical guardians, arranged diagonally, set amongst a stunning backdrop of mountain tops and clouds. From top left:
- the Phoenix, symbol of the south, summer, and fire;
- the Tiger, symbol of the west, autumn, and metal;
- the Tortoise with snake, symbol of the north, winter, and water;
- the Dragon, symbol of the east, spring, and wood.

The Perth Mint’s mint mark is above right; instead of the usual P, it is P125, marking the 125th anniversary of the mint. Near the rim on the right (next to the mint mark), the designer's initials WR, for Wade Robinson.
