The obverse of the coin shows, in a small circle below, the crowned old head of Queen Elizabeth II facing right, wearing the Royal Diamond Diadem crown and the Victoria Coronation necklace worn for her Coronation. This is her effigy known as the "Fifth Portrait" worldwide and "Sixth Portrait" in Australia, in "uncouped" version - showing the Queen's shoulders and not terminating at the neck as the normal version. On the left, in small letters on the Queen's shoulder, the artist's initials JC (for Jody Clark). Around above, the monarch's legend and the date of issue: ELIZABETH II · AUSTRALIA 2022.
Most of the obverse is taken by the image of a lion, which is one of the supporters of the Coat of Arms of New South Wales. Visible in the background is part of a cross and the stars of the Southern Cross constellation - both also parts of the state Coat of Arms. Dotted around, eight Tudor roses.
Horizontally on the left, an inscription specifying the precious metal content: 1 OUNCE .9999 Au (one troy ounce of 99.99% gold; Au is abbreviated from Aurum, the Latin word for gold).
On three lines on the right, NEWLY RISEN HOW BRIGHTLY YOU SHINE - the English translation of the Latin motto which is on a ribbon below the Coat of Arms of the state: "ORTA RECENS QUAM PURA NITES". |
