Coin | Gold Ounce 2023 Phoenix |

|
The Australian one-ounce gold piece (abbreviated as 1 oz and designated with Au for "gold") is a bullion coin format. Uniquely, in Australia there are two mints authorised to strike legal tender: the Royal Australian Mint (which also makes the country's circulating coinage) and the Perth Mint which only makes collector and bullion coins, as well as other bullion products.
Both mints endeavour to create coins with attractive designs, and to introduce new designs and themes often, in order to raise the numismatic value of the coins over the value of previous metal used.
This one-ounce gold coin with a face value of $100 was issued as part of the Perth Mint's extensive Chinese Myths and Legends range dedicated to Chinese traditional themes, and features the Phoenix.
The mint says about it: An ancient symbol of honesty, benevolence and knowledge, the Chinese mythical phoenix’s rare appearances were believed to herald forthcoming happiness, harmony and prosperity. A rare opportunity for investors, this magnificent 1oz gold bullion coin reflects the beneficial characteristics of the auspicious bird.
An immortal creature, the Chinese phoenix is traditionally portrayed as a fusion of several other birds - including the head of a pheasant, the body of a mandarin duck, the tail of a peacock, the beak of a parrot, and the wings of a swallow. |

The obverse of the coin depicts the crowned old head of Queen Elizabeth II facing right, wearing the Royal Diamond Diadem crown and the Victoria Coronation necklace worn for her Coronation. This is her effigy known as the "Fifth Portrait" worldwide and "Sixth Portrait" in Australia, in "uncouped" version - showing the Queen's shoulders and not terminating at the neck as the normal version.
On the left, in small letters on the Queen's shoulder, the artist's initials J.C (for Jody Clark).
Running continuously around the rim is the monarch's legend and the face value: ELIZABETH II 1952 - 2022 · AUSTRALIA 2023 · 1oz 9999 Au 100 DOLLARS ·.
The legend is interrupted by the "memorial" inclusion of the dates of the Queen's reign, 1952 - 2022.
The inscription around the rim also incorporates the precious metal content. "1 oz 9999 Au" means "one ounce of 99.99% gold" - Au is abbreviated from the Latin word for gold, Aurum. |

The coin portrays a phoenix, which according to an ancient Chinese lexicon is the fusion of several other birds, including the head of a pheasant, the body of a mandarin duck, the tail of a peacock, the beak of a parrot and the wings of a swallow. In its beak is the flower of a paulownia tree, said to be the only species on which the phoenix will perch. Also included in the design are stylised representations of clouds, symbols of abundance and good fortune.
The Perth Mint’s P mint mark is in the left field. On the right right, the designer's initials LB, for Lucas Bowers.

For additional peace of mind, the coin incorporates an authentication feature in the form of a micro-laser engraved letter. Detectable under a magnifying glass, it’s designed to make it significantly more difficult for the coin to be counterfeited.
Even though it was issued during the reign of King Charles III, the coin portrays the official "Queen Elizabeth II Memorial Obverse", featuring her Jody Clark effigy (in its uncouped version used in Australia) supplemented with the dates of Her Majesty’s reign - "1952 - 2022". |
